History

The ACU Students’ Association has a history that is rich in tradition. According to John Stevens' book, No Ordinary University: The History of a City Set on a Hill, in 1921 the women of Daisy Hall organized a student council. There were 12 girls and the purpose was for young people to “learn to govern and control themselves.” The next year, the women of Zellner Hall joined the student council and both dorms were represented. At the end of the school year, the entire student body voted to establish a representative group called the “United Student Activities.” The purpose of this organization was to elect and control the managers of different student activities. In 1923, the full-fledged Students’ Association was established. Wendell Bedichek was the first president. Don Morris, who was later the seventh president of the university, served as vice president. This organization was “a vehicle through which the students have expressed themselves frankly, in resolutions, with regards to thing pertaining to the welfare of the college and student body.”

For more than 80 years the Abilene Christian University has served the student body. Some of the most notable accomplishments have been establishing Welcome Week, changing the dress code to allow for shorts, initiating Fall Break, and chartering Spring Break Campaigns. Come visit the SA office to see what the officers have planned for the upcoming years.
